My Notes
Does heresy justify schism?
What about Martin Luther?
Voluntary vs. Involuntary schism
What about Machen?
- 20:09: You may say Machen was kicked out of the PCUSA? No he was not.
- Machen was defrocked (removed from ministry), not excommunicated.
- Even if it were legitimate for Machen to split from the PCUSA, Machen could have united with the many existing convervative presbyterian denominations, but instead he created his own.
- 21:05: “Machen was a schismatic. Machen was not to be respected.”
Must all Protestants unite?
- 21:25:
- ❓: What is the difference between non-union and separation?
- Redeemed Zoomer makes a point that currently conservative protestant churches have communion with each other, despite being separate denominations.
- ❓: What is the difference between non-union and separation?
- 22:45: Difference between Rutherford’s view and Redeemed Zoomer
- Rutherford argues that Christians should leave separatists and reunite with the mainline churches.
- Redeemed Zoomer recognizes that we need Christians to stay in the separatist churches so that they can push for their churches to reunite with the mainline churches.
The Long-Term Value of Institutional Churches
- 29:35: “It takes a long time, many generations of faithful men dedicating their time and resources to build up strong institutions.”
- “People were dedicated to such long term projects that they wouldn’t live to see the end of because they knew that their descendants would be dedicated to finishing what they started.”
- 31:12: “Once schism becomes an option, it’s gonna happen eventually.”
