Every believer wants to have a closer walk with God.
0:03
Nevertheless, many Christians still struggle to read
0:06
their Bibles consistently.
0:08
Today, I want to show you eight tips for how to make Bible
0:12
reading a consistent daily habit.
0:21
Hey, my name is Reagan Rose.
0:22
On this channel, I talk about a biblical approach to personal
0:26
productivity so that you can make the most of your life for God’s glory.
0:30
Make sure you stick around to the very end of the video, because
0:32
the last point I give is the one that kind of ties it all together.
Why is it so hard
0:36
So before we jump into the first tip, I think it’s helpful to think through
0:40
why it is that it’s so hard to be consistent in reading our Bibles.
0:43
We live in a time of unprecedented access to the Word of God.
0:48
I mean, if you speak English, you’ve got approximately four bazillion
0:52
translations that are good.
0:53
You’ve got tools online, we’ve got Bible software, we’ve got excellent
0:57
preachers and teachers we can listen to, commentaries up the wazoo.
1:01
You got everything you would need if you wanted to be a student of the Bible.
1:05
But we still don’t read consistently.
1:08
So why is that?
1:09
I think the main reason is we are more distracted than we’ve ever been before.
1:14
Our options for what we can do with our time are almost limitless.
1:19
And that makes it hard for us to focus our attention on the
1:23
things that really matter.
1:25
And so we need to make a plan and we need to do things that are going to
1:28
help us fight against that distraction, and instead focus our intention on
1:32
what we really want to do, which is to draw near to God in His Word.
Make a plan
1:36
So tip number one is make a plan.
1:39
You may want to read the Bible, but good intentions apart from good plans
1:43
are really just good for nothing.
1:45
And what I mean is you need a Bible reading plan.
1:48
You need to decide in advance what you’re going to read in the Word each day.
1:51
You can’t just randomly flip open to different passages and think, “oh, I
1:56
guess I’ll read this chapter today.”
1:58
I mean, you definitely can do that, but the problem is you’re not
2:00
going to stick with it for long.
2:02
And there are tons and tons of great Bible reading plans out there.
2:05
You just need to pick one!
2:07
I’ll link you in the description to some different Bible reading plans that
2:10
are available that I think are good.
2:12
And just pick one.
2:13
Choose one that you’re going to do and then commit to it.
2:16
And go through each section each day.
2:19
Once you decide what you’re going to be reading each day, you need to
2:22
decide when you’re going to do that.
Pick a time
2:24
And that’s tip number two, pick a time to read.
2:28
Personally, I think it’s best to read the Bible when you first wake up.
2:32
It kind of sets the tone for the day.
2:34
It puts your eyes on Jesus Christ rather than on your phone or
2:37
on whatever else is going on.
2:39
I think it’s the best way to start your day, but you can plan to read the Bible
2:42
at other times too, on your lunch break, maybe after work, maybe before bed.
2:47
The point though is pick a time and don’t be vague about it.
2:51
Make a really specific plan.
2:53
Decide I’m going to read it in the morning.
2:55
When in the morning at this time?
2:57
Where at that time?
2:58
On this couch.
2:59
Which Bible are you going to read?
3:00
Are you going to bring a notebook?
3:01
Figure out the details, make a plan, make it specific so that you
3:05
know exactly what to do each day.
Organize
3:08
Third, organize for success.
3:11
If you want to make bible reading a consistent daily
3:14
habit you need to organize.
3:16
So we’ve already done some of this through making a plan through picking when we’re
3:18
going to do it, but you also need to deal with some more of those details.
3:22
So here’s four organization tips that I think can make your Bible
3:26
reading time more likely to stick.
3:28
First, always read in the same spot.
3:30
Second, keep your space clean.
3:32
Nobody wants to read in a messy environment.
3:34
Third print out your Bible reading plan.
3:37
Don’t try to keep it in your head.
3:38
And don’t put it on your phone where you’re going to
3:40
check that and get distracted.
3:42
Fourth, when you finish your reading each day, open your Bible or move your
3:46
bookmark to the next spot for tomorrow.
3:48
Set yourself up so that the next day, there’s this little friction as possible
3:52
between you getting back into the Word and doing the next section of your plan.
3:56
When you organize yourself to read the Bible each day, you’re much
4:00
more likely to actually do it.
Avoid distractions
4:02
The fourth tip for reading the Bible every day as a habit is avoid distractions.
4:07
Listen, I love the Bible apps on my phone and on my tablet and on my computer.
4:12
I love that stuff.
4:12
I love technology.
4:15
But it’s distracting.
4:16
There’s too many things I could be doing on my phone than reading the Bible.
4:20
And so at least for me, when I try to read the Bible on my
4:23
phone, it always goes poorly.
4:25
I’m a big advocate for reading in a physical, paper Bible, because
4:31
it keeps the distractions far away.
4:33
In fact, I would tell you don’t even keep your phone nearby.
4:36
Don’t even give you the option of going on it.
4:38
If you’re getting up and reading your Bible in the morning,
4:41
just leave your phone charging, leave it far away from yourself.
4:44
Just remove every temptation to “check something real quick”
4:48
and just focus on the Word.
Use helps
4:50
Number five, use helps.
4:53
Use resources that are gonna help you read the Bible every day.
4:57
Many a noble voyage into the habit of Bible reading has been
5:01
scuttled on the rocks of ambition.
5:04
Oftentimes we get excited about reading the Bible.
5:06
We get excited about making this a habit again, and what do we do?
5:10
We bite off way more than we can chew.
5:12
We end up saying, “I’m going to read the Bible in 30 days!”
5:16
Okay.
5:17
Maybe you, maybe you can.
5:19
I believe in you.
5:20
You can do that.
5:21
But look, I think it’s more important that we make it a habitual daily
5:25
thing, than we make it about reading as much of the Bible as possible.
5:29
I want a lifetime of being a Bible readernot just little sprints here and
5:35
there every few months or every couple of years where I get back into it.
5:39
Don’t be too proud to use a devotional book or use a good study Bible.
5:45
There are great resources for these.
5:47
I’ll link to some of those in the description.
5:49
I love the MacArthur study Bible.
5:51
It is awesome.
5:52
One of the things that can happen when you’re reading the Bible is you get bored
5:55
because you don’t know what’s going on.
5:58
That’s okay.
5:58
Use some helps.
6:00
Use a study Bible.
6:01
It’ll give you some help in knowing what’s happening, giving you a little context.
6:05
Just reading the Bible and not understanding what it actually
6:08
means isn’t all that helpful.
6:10
You need to know what’s happening.
6:12
And so use a good devotional or use a study Bible to help you understand it.
Accountability
6:17
Number six is enlist accountability.
6:20
God gave His Word, not just individual believers, but to His church.
6:25
You have other believers, or you ought to have other believers, in your
6:28
life at your church, read together.
6:32
Pick a plan with your small group or with some other people who you’re close with at
6:35
church, or maybe with your spouse or with a friend or with people in your family.
6:40
It doesn’t matter.
6:41
Just get a group of other believers and decide together
6:44
what you’re going to read through.
6:46
That sort of holy peer pressure keep you on track with making sure you’re
6:51
actually reading the Bible every day.
6:53
And it can be really simple.
6:54
My wife had a group of ladies at a previous job where they were reading
6:59
through a book of the Bible together, and then they’d get together once a week
7:02
for lunch and they would talk about it.
7:05
That’s all it was.
7:06
They didn’t do something crazy or intense.
7:08
They just picked some stuff to read through and then they discussed it later.
7:12
You can make it that simple.
7:14
The point is accountability helps you to be more consistent and more
7:18
habitual with reading the Bible.
Apply What Youre Learning
7:19
And number seven is apply what you’re learning.
7:23
Look, we don’t read the Bible just so we can know more.
7:26
We read it so we can understand and believe and obey.
7:31
And so you want to see your reading in the Bible actually changing your life.
7:36
Be deliberate about this, what you’re studying, what you’re reading
7:39
each day, think through, pray it back to God and try to actually put
7:43
into action what you’re learning.
7:45
If you’re reading about some of the one, another commands from the new
7:48
Testament, consider how you might love other people in your church
7:53
more, what specifically could you do?
7:54
How could you apply that?
7:55
If you’re reading the Psalms, think about how, the way that the Psalmist
7:59
phrase things, how that could influence the way that you pray.
8:02
Or how you think about God when you’re worshiping Him.
8:05
Deliberately, try to take what you’re learning in the word each day and actually
8:09
apply it to your life and you’ll see that not only are you getting more out
8:13
of it, but you’re wanting to read more.
8:15
The habit of reading the Word begins to stick more as you see
8:18
the results from it in your life.
8:20
And the final tip I have for you for reading the Bible consistently as a habit
Start a Morning Routine
8:25
is number eight: start a morning routine.
8:28
So a Christian morning routine is basically where you wake up a little
8:32
bit earlier than you would have, and you do some very specific things.
8:36
Things like studying the Bible, praying, exercise, journaling, and a few other
8:42
kind of self-development activities so that you are ensuring that every day
8:47
you’re making progress in growing with the Lord and in your personal life.
8:51
The number one thing you can do is start having a daily morning routine.
8:56
And I have created an entire free mini-course on how to do this, along
9:01
with a free PDF planner that gives you all the steps you need to take to start
9:05
building your own morning routine.
9:07
I’ll share a link to that in the description.
9:09
And that mini-course and that planner are totally free.
9:12
I just want to give you a resource that’s going to help you grow.
9:15
I’ve also created an entire paid online course about morning routines
9:19
that goes into way more depth.
9:20
And it is just a step by step guide that walks you through how to build
9:25
a morning routine of your own.
9:26
That’s going to give you the plan and the motivation you need to actually
9:30
start getting on track with your devotions and with your personal life.
9:34
Check out my paid course, it’s called POWER Mornings.
9:36
You can learn more in the video here.
9:39
And for more videos on a Christian approach to personal productivity,
