My Notes

  • 02:39 What this talk is about
  • 03:44: The problem: When we market, we mostly follow the marketing that we see. But most of the marketing that we see is from giant marketing campaigns like “Avengers”, “The Last of Us” etc.
    • What works for AAA games, is not the same as what will work for small indie games or AA games.

Rule 1: Get to the point quickly

  • 06:17:
  • 09:29: Your store page is your single most important marketing

Rule 2: Works for newcomers

  • 10:38: It’s difficult to make marketing that appeals to newcomers.
    • 12:33: Think about existing players AND newcomers.
      • Give newcomers the context they need to care about it or they will be out of the loop and move on.
    • 14:20: ❓: How much do people know your game per channel?

Rule 3: Think what environment your viewers will see your content in

  • 14:52:
    • View your content on a small screen, scrolled through quickly, because this is how most of your viewers will see it.
      • Does your content read well on a small screen?

Rule 4: Know your next step

  • 16:50: What is your sales funnel?
    • What is the next thing your viewers should do?
      • Always know where people should go next.
      • Call to actions are great! BUT can be mega cringe!

Micro level checklist

  • Does it get to the point in the first few seconds?
  • Does it work for newcomers?
  • Does it fit the platform and environment it’s watched/read on?
  • Does it point to the next step?

Macro Level

  • 18:25:
  • Just show your game.
  • 20:28Bonus rule: Know your money shot
    • What is the shot that people really like seeing
    • Tik Tok is a good platform to try a bunch of shots and find out which one people react to.

PR Campaign Evolution

  • 21:21: 1. make the game
  • 2: regular PR Campaign
  • 3: rinse, repeat
  • 4: adapt
