📖Bible Passage

Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.

Points

  • God made us for one reason only, to bring God glory.
    • So we need to be praying daily that we would esteem His holy name.
    • The Hebrew word translated glory means to have great weight
      • God is weighty and glorious.
  • Daniel 5: Belshazzar made a great feast.
    • They praised gods of gold, bronze iron and stone.
    • The fingers of a man’s hand miraculously appeared and wrote on his wall.
    • This Belshazzar’s countenance changed.
    • Daniel revealed the meaning of these words on the wall.
      • Dan 5.23 but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.
    • God took away Belshazzar’s kingdom and his life the next day.
  • We can live one of two lifestyles
    1. Glory in God. Bring glory to Him.
      • Ps 105.3 Glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.
    2. Bring glory to ourselves.
  • If you glory in God, then you must know God, who He is and what His name is.
    • What is God’s name?
      • God does not need a name in the same way we do. We need a name to know who we are and to define us. But God does not need to be defined.
      • God gives us His name for us, not for Him. It is for our benefit to know His name, so that we can better know who He is.
      • God is different. God is His name, is His identity. It is all that He is.
  • Moses asked God to show him His glory:
    • In Exodus 33.
    • There are 3 circumstances that caused Moses to ask for this:
      1. He wanted to better know God:
        • He had been called to a special and important job.
        • He lived a life apart from God, but God called him out of that life and called him to fulfill God’s purpose.
        • Moses knew that the more he knew God, the more he would want to love, serve and honor God.
          • ❓Is this true of you?
      2. Moses wanted the assurance of God’s forgiveness.
        • The people of Israel had committed incredible sin against God by worshipping the golden calf. God’s wrath against them was great and their need for forgiveness was great.
      3. Moses did not know what the future would hold. All he knew was that he needed God.
        • Exod 33:15-16 Moses said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here. For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?” [[Exod-33#v16|]]
        • Moses had great urgency, utterly aware of his desperate need for God
        • How does God work in this urgency in us?
          • First it shows us through scripture, the Word
          • Second, the Holy Spirit, also uses our lack to show us of our need for Him.
            • We realize that we do not know Him as well as we should.
            • Jer 9:23-24 Yahweh says, “Don’t let the wise man glory in his wisdom. Don’t let the mighty man glory in his might. Don’t let the rich man glory in his riches. But let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for I delight in these things,” says Yahweh. [[Jer-09#v24|]]
            • Knowing God is also comforting.
          • The LORD teaches us His name so that we will confess His glory
            • Ps 115.1 Not to us, Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth’s sake.
            • 1 Pet 2.9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, [so] that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
            • Exod 34.8 Moses hurried and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped.
            • Ps 51.17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.
              • The heart that worships God in humility will not be despised by God.
  • What are some of the works of God that should cause us to glory in His name? Here are just some of them:
    • The works of His mighty creation.
      • A believer can see the might and wonder of God in even a simple ladybug.
      • Jonathan Edwards said when he wanted to see God, he would go out into nature and cry out to God.
    • God’s work of justice in our lamentable fall:
      • We see our great pain and suffering in this fallen world and we see God’s justice. We see that we are not worthy of Him and that we are worthy of the curse of the fallen world. We also see that in grace God has given us the ministry and work of Christ who redeems us and in His mercy makes us worthy
    • We glory in God’s great goodness in providence.
      • All things come, not by chance, but by His thorough plan.
      • God has not made one mistake.
      • He is so good to me.
    • God’s work of mercy in recreating us
      • in justification and sanctification, and preserving us.
      • so that we may glorify Him.
      • God stops us and converts us and then we want to serve Him and praise Him with our lives.
  • We must also pray that we would live for God’s holy name.
    • By nature our whole life blasphemes His holy name. We blaspheme His name when:
      • Our unconverted neighbors cannot tell the difference between their lives and our lives.
      • We want our glory before God’s glory.
    • Here in our text God directs us to glory in His name so much that we would never blaspheme His name and would only want what He wants.
      • Then our prayers would no longer be a shopping list of our own wants.
    • We ought to want to do all things in our life to the glory of God.
      • In our works, our homes, our families, and all other areas we should seek to glorify God in every area.
        • This is how Jesus lived. Jesus kept no glory for Himself, and gave all glory to His Father.
        • John 13:31-32 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately. [[John-13#v32|]]
        • John 17.4 I glorified you on the earth. I have accomplished the work which you have given me to do.
        • Ps 115.1

Application

  • If glorifying God is not the sole purpose of you and your life then you will perish forever.
    • You must be born again, crying our Lord, give me grace.
    • Today get alone with God, bow to Him and give your life to Him.
