đź“–Bible Passage

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,

Points

  • Grace is a priority for prayer we need it
    • Last week we learned of the grace from the Father
  • peace is the second thing listed that we need.
    • it is also a vital priority for us.
    • Today we learn about the peace from the Father and the Son.
  • This peace already exists between the Father and Son, and then they give it to us.
    • One of Paul’s favorite titles for God is The God of Peace.
    • There are no inner tensions in God:
      • no depression
    • In God there is perfect peace:
      • serenity, tranquility.
  • Why is God the God of Peace?
      1. He is perfectly sinless:
      • Our sin disturbs our peace.
        • The loss of peace in the heart of a believer is ultimately traceable to our fallen condition.
        • But God is not fallen.
      1. God is sovereign. God is all-powerful
      • âť“: Do you ever ask yourself Why do I become anxious?
        • If you really think about it, we are anxious because we realize our lack of control.
          • We are anxious about the economy because we do not have the power to shape it or control it as we wish. We have these same anxieties about elections, about our health, or the health of a loved one.
      • But God is sovereign. He is totally in control of everything.
        • Nothing is impossible for God and nothing is beyond Him.
        • No one is able to thwart His plans
      • Because God is sovereign He has perfect peace.
        • This is why it is so great to be in Him, because in Him we find His perfect peace.
      1. The peace that Gal 1.3 talks about is inner peace.
      • Philippians 4:6-7: In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving , let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. [[Phil-04#v7|]]
        • God’s peace will guard our hearts.
        • Remember the disciples in the storm, and Jesus peacefully sleeping on the ship.
          • The disciples had no peace, but Christ did, because He was in complete control of the storm and everything else.
        • How do we find this peace?
          • “in everything, by prayer and petition (supplication) with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God”
            • God wants you to communicate your wants and needs to Him.
            • Simply ask. Present your requests to God.
              • Ask with thanksgiving.
                • Do not come merely as a petitioner.
                • Do not ask with an ungrateful heart or entitlement.
                • It should not be hard to come with thanksgiving because there are so many things to thank Him for.
                  • We can be thankful that God is so open, that He allows us to come to Him at any time for any reason. What other king would do that? Wow.
                    • Esther’s own husband, a king, wouldn’t even allow her to speak to him unless he first invited her, and would kill her if she violated this rule. Not like our God.
        • Peace is promised to us:
          • Philippians 4.7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
          • Notice when we rest our faith in Christ we no longer feel anxious because we know that our Father has this all handled. We find inner peace in Him.
          1. The peace promised here is mutual peace. Peace in our society, community and church.
          • We not only receive peace, but we also bring peace to those around us. Christ calls us to be peace makers.
            • Matthew 5.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
            • Paul desires for peace in the church in Philippi in Philippians 4.2-3.
            • When peace is lost, then strife, conflict and war grow.
          • What can we say about this mutual peace?
              1. This mutual peace must be guarded.
              • Do you realize that our adversary hates our local church and would love to destroy it?
                • He seeks to divide us, corrupt us,
                • Do you see the ways that he is plotting against us? Be on guard. Trust in God. Guard your heart and your thoughts.
              1. This mutual peace must be repaired.
              • Where it is lost, we must take whatever steps are necessary to repair this peace.
          1. The peace promised here is perfect peace:
          • When we enter glory, we will dwell in God’s house forever and we will enter perfect peace.
            • Inner peace and mutual peace.
            • His peace will be in each heart and will permeate each and every one of us. It will be perfect. We will have been delivered from sin and Satan will be a threat no more.
              • We will have perfect communion with God, Father, Son and Spirit.
              • It will be absolutely delightful. And we will enjoy that perfect peace forever, world without end.

Application

  • Perhaps you have not experienced this peace.
    • Isaiah 57:20-21 But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it can’t rest and its waters cast up mire and mud. “There is no peace”, says my God, “for the wicked.” [[Isa-57#v21|]]
    • Without God we will not and cannot experience this peace.
    • If we are true Christians, we not only look at this peace, but we are enjoying it even now.
    • But if you are not a true Christian you will continue to find no peace.
  • Peace with God vs. Peace from God:
    • Peace with God:
      • This is a more basic and objective God.
      • There must be peace between you and God.
      • You and I must lay aside our war and strife with God. Not just some of it but all of it.
      • How? Through faith and trust in Him:
        • in His righteousness.
        • Romans 5.1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
        • If you are a stranger to God, then come to Him now.
        • The most fundamental thing of all is peace with God who died for your sins.
