📖Bible Passage
He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” [[Matt-28#v7|]]
Points
- The soldiers must have thought they had an easy assignment, defending a dead body.
- But in the end they were terrified because they were given an impossible task.
- The soldiers have every cause to fear for:
- a powerful angel came appearing as lightning and moved the stone from the tomb
- almost every time an angel appears in the Bible, someone is mortally afraid of them, and the angel tells them not to be afraid.
- an earthquake came, the second in two days.
- a powerful angel came appearing as lightning and moved the stone from the tomb
- but the angel told women not to be afraid and brought good tidings of great joy and gave them two commands:
- Come and see the tomb: an invitation.
- Go and tell the world what you have seen: a commission.
Command 1: Come and See
- This first command Come and see was an invitation.
- An invitation to see the glorious proof of the person of Christ as Lord, or Jehovah
- The angel explicitly called Jesus “Lord”.
- The angel wasn’t saying that Jesus was someone’s lord. The angel was saying, this is his Lord.
- There can be no other understanding than that the angel was saying this is Jehovah, LORD.
- Jesus Himself said that He would die and raise again.
- John 10.18 No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father.”
- John 2.19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
- The fact that this event happened just as He said it would is proof that He is God of all!
- This command is an invitation to view Christ’s death in the light of His resurrection
- How should we view and understand the death of Christ? It must be in light of His resurrection.
- Jesus’ resurrection is utterly unique amongst any other death in history. No one else has resurrected themselves after they died.
- Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. He removed the curse of sin and death.
- Romans 3.25 whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;
- Ephesians 1.7 in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
- Galatians 3.13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”
- Jesus became the curse of sin and death for us.
- Genesis 2.17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
- Jesus redeemed us from the curse
- Hosea 13.14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death! Death, where are your plagues? Sheol, where is your destruction? “Compassion will be hidden from my eyes.
- 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 “Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. [[1 Cor-15#v56|]][[1 Cor-15#v57|]]
- Jesus removed the pain and curse of death.
- Hebrews 2:14-15 Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. [[Heb-02#v15|]]
- Hebrews 13.20 Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus,
- The covenant between God and man in salvation is monopluric.
- This means that only one Person does anything in this covenant. God does it all. We do nothing. It is all grace.
- This covenant is unconditional.
- Ezekiel 11.19 I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh;
- John 11.25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
- This means that only one Person does anything in this covenant. God does it all. We do nothing. It is all grace.
- Here is the promise: Jesus enters Heaven by His own blood, and you and I may now enter Heaven by His own blood.
- Intellectuals say that we should have blind faith. This is a contradiction of terms. Instead, scripture calls us to come and see Jesus.
- We don’t have faith despite not seeing Him. We have faith because we have seen Him.
- Our faith is not based on a momentary flash of experience. It is based on Him and His faithfulness.
- Intellectuals say that we should have blind faith. This is a contradiction of terms. Instead, scripture calls us to come and see Jesus.
Command 2: Go and see
- This second command was a commission.
- The angel said “Go quickly and tell his disciples,”
- Why should we tell His disciples? Because they need to hear:
- God’s disciples are discouraged. Burdened by doubt, failure and sin.
- Peter needed to hear this good news after He was discouraged because He denied Jesus.
- Mark 16.7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He goes before you into Galilee. There you will see him, as he said to you.‘”
- You and I need to be told this, and reminded again and ag
- Peter needed to hear this good news after He was discouraged because He denied Jesus.
- God’s disciples are discouraged. Burdened by doubt, failure and sin.
- And of course we should the whole world.
- I cannot tell you that your message will always be accepted. But I can confidently say that God’s word will not return void. Those people who are His will hear the truth and accept it.
- Isaiah 55.11 so is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do.
- We have a responsibility to tell this Good News to the whole world.
- I cannot tell you that your message will always be accepted. But I can confidently say that God’s word will not return void. Those people who are His will hear the truth and accept it.
