đź“–Bible Passage

who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father— to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. [[Gal-01#v5|]]

Points

  • Here Paul can’t help but burst into praise for his Lord.
    • Let us never be too good to praise our God. This is the best possible use of our time.
  • Paul’s purpose in writing this letter to the Galatians is to expose and correct the errors of false doctrine.

Jesus camp to deliver us from this present evil age

  • What did Jesus Christ come to earth to do for His people?
    • To deliver us from this present evil age.
    • From this corrupted wold

From its condemnation

From it’s horrible condition

  • This world is filled with idols and sins and every evil thing.
  • Christ came to gather a people from among these abominations
    • A holy people yet not hermits living in self-imposed obscurity
    • people who live for Christ, not for self or for world.
  • Jesus Christ died for this very purpose.
  • Jesus lifts up sinners out of darkness, and sin.

From its customs

  • There are many things which the people of the world can do but the people of God cannot and must not do.
    • In manners of business:
      • Dishonest business is everywhere, yet Christians must not follow suit.

From its spirit

  • The spirit of the world is “I can swim. If everyone else drowns, there will be more room for me.”
    • Dog eat dog.
    • The spirit of this age does not know mercy.
    • It exploits the poor.
    • It is selfish and seeks gain at all costs.
  • Christ came to deliver a people who will love others rather than themselves.

From all fears of this world

  • We live in abject fear and effective slavery of those around us.
    • e.g. the emperor of Rome. Who dared to contradict the emperor? Paul did. Early Christians did. When Rome required that Christians worship their gods and idols, Christians bravely defied the world.
    • Should we follow the demands of this sinful world? We are not of this world.
      • Be far more loving to the world than the world is to itself
        • But still do not fear the world.

How Christ delivered us?

  • What did Christ do to deliver us from this present evil world?
    • The answer found in our text today is Jesus gave Himself for us.
      • Jesus gave up His crown, His majesty, and even His garments. He gave His back to the smiters, His cheek to the tormenters who tore his beard.
      • He gave His very self.
      • Therefore, out of gratitude for Him let us not live under slavery of this world.
        • How could we do such a thing, after all that He has done for us? He gave us such a great gift, for such a great price, and yet how could we return to slavery under sin. Do we not care?
  • How does the death of Christ deliver us from this evil world?
    • By making sin hateful and repugnant to us?
      • How can we be friends with the world who cast Jesus out and hung him on a tree?
      • Sin slew God, and yet He delivered us.
    • By the splendor of His act of giving Himself to die for His very enemies.
  • Has Christ delivered you from this world?

Why Christ Delivered Us

  • Galatians 1.4 says according to the will of our God
    • God delivered us because it was His will. This was His choice from eternity past. This is what He predestined.
      • Many people are repulsed by predestination but we delight in it because we know that God is good and cares for and delivers His people.

Application

  • Let us clearly accordingly to the truth.
    • There would be much more persecution of Christians if they followed Him more rightly. For this would require us to bravely stand up against the world.
  • Case Study: John Bunyan was imprisoned and told that he could leave prison any time if he would stop preaching Christ crucified for sinners, but John Bunyan refused.
  • What shall we say concerning all this?
    • Our text finishes Galatians 1.5 to whom be the glory forever and ever
      • There is no end to the glory that God deserves.
      • There is enough glory in the cross of Christ to last throughout all eternity.
    • âť“: Has Jesus Christ delivered us from the world?
      • Then let us begin to glorify God now. Let us praise Him. Our whole life should be an endless hallelujah.
  • There are two occassions when we ought to praise God.
    • In season: Praise Him when you feel like it.
      • When you are in health.
    • Out of season: Praise Him even when you don’t feel like it.
      • If for no other reason then just to remind the devil that he is not your master.
      • Even when you are sick.
      • When you are in deep sorrow.
    • Simply praise Him in whatever situation.
      • Simply being a child of God, bought and redeemed from this present evil world: this is more than enough reason to praise and love Him.
  • Tell the world what a dear Savior you have found.
